Walkers are Welcome
Cheddar – ‘Walkers Are Welcome’
A group of people from Cheddar has come together to achieve ‘Walkers Are Welcome’ status for the village. This followed a well-attended meeting to test interest in the idea at which residents and businesses decided to give it a go.
The Walkers are Welcome scheme has been going since 2007 across the UK with more than 100 places taking part, led by the communities. It is about giving walkers a great time when they visit so the village becomes known for the quality of its walks, its welcome and the wider experience.
Becoming known and listed as a ‘Walkers Are Welcome’ destination has been shown to boost the local economy, bring communities together, promote the area and improve the walking. For visitors it means good paths, clear information and better facilities.
The Cheddar Walking group now has its own web site where the latest news can be found.
From the community point of view, we really need people who like walking in the local area to help lead walks around the village, out on to the moors or up on to the Mendips. Also, if you are someone who walks in the area regularly and can report broken gates, signs, stiles, etc. please get in touch. Email Cheddar Walking via the web site for more details.
